TaskMaster Season 14
Taskmaster is a British game show, in which five comedians are filmed while completing different hilarious tasks, all without knowing what the other comedians are doing. What you end up with are five completely different approaches to the same task. Each episode, the comedians and two hosts watch the footage highlights and provide comedic commentary in front of a live audience (except at the height of COVID-19) and award points. At the end of the episode, one comedian takes home a bunch of second-hand trinkets the other contestants brought in—so it’s competitive, but just in good fun. Taskmaster is a super Autistic mix of:
Observational humor
Studying psychology
Playing (silly and outrageous) games
Signature groans, whoops, honks, and phrases
A host with a flat affect
Quirky skits
Wonder
Original songs
Fun costumes
Out-of-the-box thinking
Every season has at least one cast member that represents Autistic culture and traits (not a diagnosis, just an observation) in an unscripted and truly authentic way, and season 14 features Fern Brady—an out-and-proud Auttie! Her interpretation of tasks, reactions, and humor are all delightfully relatable. Taskmaster celebrates eccentricities, humor, and being uniquely yourself.
This show is so representative of Autistic culture that I think many Autties would like it, but it is especially recommended if you SpIn on:
Games
Comedy
TV/film production
Psychology/sociology
Education
Theater
I watched all fourteen seasons available on Youtube in less than two months (yay SpIns!) and now it’s one of my regular background shows. Need a mood boost or just to feel less alone? Give Taskmaster a try!
